Dense forests, steep mountains, winding forest tracks – where others go on holiday, Martin Lener’s working day begins. With his Fendt 942 Vario and a road stabiliser, he maintains the forest tracks in the Tyrolean Alps.

Farmer, entrepreneur and associated with Fendt for 52 years

Martin Lener grew up in Tyrol, Austria, surrounded by mountains, cows and Fendt tractors. What began as a dairy farm is now much more: Lener runs a farm with 60 dairy cows and manages Lener Hackgut GmbH, which employs around 40 permanent staff. His company covers a wide range of activities: wood chip production and trading, earthworks and road construction, soil stabilisation and composting. From March to December, he and his team ensure safe well-maintained paths, and properly dug ditches. He operates around 15 Fendt tractors, ranging from tried-and-tested models to new ones, as well as lorries and construction machinery. The Fendt brand has been an integral part of the business for 52 years.

Steep forest tracks, tight bends, and heavy stabilisers – in the mountains of Tyrol, Austria, a tractor has to perform contradictory tasks: It has to be heavy enough for traction, yet manoeuvrable enough for the next hairpin bend. To achieve this, Martin Lener has relied on the Fendt 942 Vario with Profi+ kit since 2025. “On steep forest tracks, we need weight and traction to be able to work safely. At the same time, we have to navigate tight bends,” says Lener, describing the requirements. VarioGrip, various ballasting options and VarioDrive with all-wheel drive work together to ensure that the Fendt 942 Vario builds up traction on loose ground whilst remaining manoeuvrable. In addition to traction and manoeuvrability, lifting power also plays a key role. “Some of our stabilisers weigh 8,500 kg – that really pushes things to the limit,” says Lener about the heavy implements.

New method: recycling asphalt instead of removing it

For the past three years, Lener has been using a method that is cost-effective and, above all, fast: an attached stabilizer that works the asphalt directly into the sub-base in a single pass, thereby mixing it. The advantages are clear: fewer transport journeys, less gravel and foreign material, and the road can be resurfaced more quickly. If the bearing capacity of the sub-base does not yet meet the required specifications, a binder course is also incorporated. It therefore works more efficiently and significantly more sustainably.

Precise billing, keeping track of the fleet

Track guidance is also often active during their work. “Our billing for earthworks and road construction is usually based on square metres or running metres. We can record this precisely with the Fendt Guide guidance system. That makes billing easier,” reports the Austrian. The Fendt Connect telemetry solution is also part of his daily routine: “It allows me to check fuel levels, service intervals and work progress at a glance, saving me a few phone calls to the staff.” The farm’s large tractors clock up around 1,000 working hours in front of the stabiliser. For transport, he tends to use the Fendt 700 Vario series; when it comes to the milling machines, he can even switch to the Fendt 1000 Vario if necessary.

Lener doesn’t just use his tractor towed attachments for road construction. Vegetables are also grown in the region – and stony soils are a real problem. Using the Fendt 942 Vario and a stone crusher Lener crushes the stones directly in the field. VarioGrip reduces ground pressure, ensuring the arable land is compacted as little as possible.

The new one and the old favourite

Lener has a long-standing relationship with the Fendt 900 Vario series. A first-generation Fendt Favorit 926 Vario is still on the farm. “The old favourite is now enjoying a well-deserved retirement and is only used for lighter work,” says Lener.

Since 2025, the Fendt 942 Vario has been handling the heavy-duty tasks. According to Lener, it consumes less fuel per unit of power than the 2010 Fendt 936 Vario, which is also in use on the farm. The new cab with FendtONE has won him over. In the menus, he can save the settings for the various implements, so that the tractor can be swapped over easily. “In terms of power output, the Fendt 942 Vario is even more economical than the 936,” Lener has calculated.
