Fuel savings and driver comfort are key for Co Cork contractor

Jeremiah O’Donovan is a contractor and farmer based in county Cork in the south of Ireland, in the heart of a mixed farming region. Jeremiah started his contracting business 30 years ago this year and it has grown and evolved in that time to cater for the demands of his customers. Most notably the increase in dairy production in this region in recent years. However contracting work is also conducted for arable, beef and equine customers.

Jeremiahs "Pocket Rockets"

At the centre of his business is a fleet of “Pocket Rocket” Fendt’s according to Jeremiah. Fendt models include a 313 and two 516’s. The mainstay of the business is baled silage, with two combination balers in the fleet making more than 25,00 bales of silage per year and a couple of thousand bales of straw on top of that. Mowing, tedding, and raking of the grass crop is also undertaken. Each of the Fendt’s have Fendt Cargo loaders fitted which allows for greater flexibility during peak work periods. As well as activities associated with gathering the grass crop, the Fendt tractors also earn their keep at slurry application duties as well as hedge trimming.

Fendt tractors come with many advantages

Atkins Farm Machinery are the local Fendt dealer for Jeremiah and he comments “that from sales to service they are excellent in every way and any issue with the tractors whether with setup or servicing is quickly and expertly sorted”

Jeremiah continues to say, “there are two standout advantages of having Fendt tractors in my fleet, the fuel efficiency and due to driver comfort it is easier to get drivers, which is a major advantage in the current tight labour market.”

His tractors are the best allround workhorses

The oldest of the Fendt’s in the fleet is a 2018 registration 313 with Fendt Cargo loader, this is used for feeding the cattle on the home farm and lighter work in the contracting business. Technology is playing a bigger role in Jeremiah’s business and with this in mind, the latest 516 Power Plus version with Varioguide autosteer allows him to give his customers the accuracy they require from mowing to spreading slurry which is done with a tanker mounted 10 metre dribble bar system. When asked why 2 x 516 Fendt’s are the main workhorses in a contracting business, Jeremiah commented “that they replaced two 6 cylinder tractors from other brands and he needed the same output with better manoeuvrability that would cover all areas of his business and he has found that they fulfill this brief and do far more than he expected”
